Getting Free Driveway Quotes: Red Flags of Cowboy Contractors
Updated 14/09/2026 · 4 min read
Driveway work has one of the UK's worst reputations for cowboy contractors and doorstep cold-calling - "we've got leftover tarmac from a job down the road" is one of the most well-known scam openers in home improvement. Knowing what a fair quoting process looks like is the best protection.
What a fair quote process looks like
- An in-person site visit before a firm price, not a number given over the phone with no assessment of ground conditions at all
- A written, itemised quote breaking down excavation, sub-base, surfacing and any drainage or kerbing work separately
- No pressure to sign or pay a deposit on the spot
- A clear timeline and start date, not a vague "we'll fit you in this week"
- Willingness to answer questions about sub-base depth, materials, and their own insurance without hesitation
Classic red flags
- "Leftover materials from a job nearby" - a genuinely famous cold-call tactic, almost never a real coincidence, and often a sign of substandard materials or no proper sub-base at all
- Pressure to decide immediately, often with a "today only" discount that doesn't stand up to scrutiny
- Cash-only, no invoice - makes it much harder to pursue a complaint later if the driveway fails within months
- A quote dramatically below others with no clear explanation - almost always means a thinner sub-base or fewer excavation hours than the job actually needs
- Reluctance to provide insurance details or a written guarantee
- Requesting full or majority payment before work starts - a modest deposit is normal, being asked for most of the cost upfront is a real risk
What to do if you suspect a problem after the fact
If a driveway has already started cracking, sinking or pooling water within a year or two of being laid, get a second, independent opinion from a different contractor before raising a dispute - a written assessment identifying the actual cause (usually inadequate sub-base or poor drainage) is far more useful than a general sense that something's wrong.
Comparing quotes properly
Getting 2-3 quotes is the single most effective protection against both being overcharged and ending up with a driveway that fails early - it gives you a genuine baseline to judge any individual quote against. See our guide to vetting a contractor for the specific checks worth making before you commit.

Is a leftover materials offer ever legitimate?
Almost never - it's one of the most well-known cold-call tactics in home improvement, and often signals substandard materials or no proper sub-base.
Should I pay a large deposit upfront?
A modest deposit is normal, but being asked for most of the cost before work starts is a real risk if the contractor doesn't complete the job.
How many quotes should I get before choosing?
Two to three is enough to give you a genuine baseline to judge any individual quote against.
