Best Time of Year to Lay a Driveway (And Why Winter Usually Isn't It)

Driveway materials cure and settle differently depending on the weather during and immediately after installation, and getting the timing wrong can genuinely affect how well a surface performs long term.

Spring and early autumn: the sweet spot

March-May and September-October generally offer the best balance across the UK: the ground is typically dry enough to work without excessive rain disrupting groundwork, and temperatures suit curing for resin, tarmac and block paving jointing alike. These periods are also usually less busy for contractors than peak summer, which can mean earlier availability.

Why summer isn't automatically better

Summer is the busiest period for driveway contractors, which often means longer lead times and, in some cases, higher prices simply due to demand. Why winter is generally avoided

• Resin bound and tarmac need dry, reasonably mild conditions to cure properly - installing in cold, wet weather risks a surface that doesn't set correctly and fails prematurely
• Frost specifically rules out most surfacing work, since freezing temperatures during curing can compromise the finished surface
• Block paving is more weather-tolerant than resin or tarmac and can often be laid year-round, except in frost, making it the most flexible choice if timing is constrained

What this means for planning your project

If you have a specific event or deadline in mind (moving house, hosting a gathering), build in a buffer rather than booking work for the week beforehand - weather delays are common and contractors won't compromise on curing conditions just to hit a date, since a rushed job in poor conditions tends to fail early.

Booking ahead

Given how busy spring and early autumn tend to be, booking a few months ahead for these windows is sensible if your timing is flexible - last-minute availability in the most popular months is limited.
